Thousands of marble and stone sculptures survive from the Early Bronze Age in the Cycladic Islands off the east coast of Greece. Produced for approximately 1000 years, various stages of development are illustrated. From the Archaeologia series, Phylakopi I represents one of the last stages of production, being a highly stylized, hexagonal shape of the female body. Originally the sculptures were painted in reds, yellows, and blacks. Here I have used blue for a more Mediterranean Sea appeal instead of the darkness of black. |
