The lands of the midnight sun have a diverse geography spanning three continents (North America, Europe, and Asia). The summer months yield almost 24 hours of daylight, rising at approximately 3:00 AM and setting about 11:30 PM. It never gets dark! In Finland, the summer solstice is celebrated as a national holiday (known as Juhannus) on the 21-22 June. Bonfires are lit at midnight and parties dance all night long. Illumination of pure color without form is observable by all. True reds, oranges, and yellows consume the sky in Sunrise Sunset, an installation of the Fire Flame & Sun series. Are you sure you know what time of day it is? Muted colors are represented in Midnight Sun, an interpretation of the 24 hours of daylight seen in the Northwest Territories in Canada. |
