Following the Greek Dark Ages (1100-800 BC), human and animal figures reappear on the pottery of the Late Geometric period (760-735 BC). The pottery served as large-scale, commemorative grave monuments, typically with a burial under the marker. These horses are part of a funerary scene on a krater by the Dipylon Master. The figures are highly patterned, stylized archetypes; no individual traits are painted. Another characteristic is the lack of perspective. Hence Two Horses may look like a two-headed, eight-legged creature but it was the Greek style at the time for depicting multiples. This is an installation of the Archaeologia series. |
